Ceramic Heads

Second year tudents created self portraits reflecting some aspect of their personal culture and experiences. This student used hats as metaphors for her dreams...the wizard hat reflected he childhood dream of having magical powers...the baseball cap and knitted cap represented her college dreams. The dreams get closer to reality as they get closer to her head.

This student's work was about her dreams of flying...she is a pilot.

Big Heads a la Picasso and Ahmed Alsoudani

What do two artists from different parts of the world say about the human experience? Picasso created the weeping woman around the time of the second world war. Ahmed Alsoudani created fractured heads after the first gulf war...oh by the way he is a middle eastern artist who attended school in the art school US.

Students create blind contour line drawings of themselves and then enlarged them and painted over the top of a collage, back to Rauschenberg, and then painted them utilizing a color scheme that communicated something about themselves and where they are in the world at this moment.

Walk in my shoes...

Students chose a pair of shoes to tell a story about their lives and personal culture.

One student chose to alter their band shoes...

...and another student selected a pair of boots she loved (to represent her love of fashion) and combined it with images of koi fish, popular in her Japanese culture.

Rauschenberg and Johns Inspired Works

How can words and color be used to communicate an idea?

Students selected words or quotes that connected to their big idea, their personal culture and a color scheme that reinforced what they were trying to communicate and utilized Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg as their inspiration.

Barbara Kruger

What is the significance of Kruger's work?

Students took images from contemporary magazines and combined them in the style of Kruger to comment on big ideas they explored throughout the year.

Pantry as Culture

What can you learn about a person's culture from peeking in their pantry?

Many of the things our class learned about the culture in the US is most of our food can be made quickly...in 15 minutes or less. There are a lot of boxed meals inspired by other cultures but are far removed from their original forms.
